I was involved in NCSU's chapter of SAE throughout my undergraduate time at NCSU.  I played a major part in building 3 baja cars, and a smaller role in 2 formula cars. For Baja I was a co-team leader with Chad Zimmer and Julian Lamb. I worked mainly on Frame design, drivetrain design, and vehicle fabrication. The following are pictures of one of the Baja cars that we built. This one was the culmination of our baja car experience. It won several first place awards at the competitions for overall design, light weight, maneuverability, handling, acceleration, and aesthetics. We have come very close to winning the entire competition several times, but have come up short due to wrecks.
This is the frame while I was still welding. Most of the frame is made of 1.5" and 1" 0.065" wall 6061-T6 tubing. I did all of the welding on this car. I GTAW (TIG) welded this frame using ER-5356 Aluminum filler rod.  Making the frame out of Aluminum has allowed us to have the lightestweight car at the competitions for the last 3 years.

This is the frame as I am nearing completion on the welding.  We are starting to attach components.
This is the finished car at competition in Dayton Ohio. I accompanied this car to races in Cookeville Tennessee, Dayton Ohio and Orlando Florida.
This is a picture of the car winning the hill climb portion of the competition.
